Ballowali Encounter: Dasmesh Regiment vs Indian Armed Forces
During the Sikh struggle for freedom the term “encounter” was often used by the state media, where it would be reported that the security forces killed Sikh militants following a fierce encounter. In reality a large majority of these reported encounters were fake, whereby arrested militants and innocent Sikhs were killed under this pretence. The real encounters in which handfuls of Sikh fighters took on the might of the security forces went unreported by the media, but spread across the state from village to village with tales of the Sikh fighters bravery and courage inspiring others. One such encounter took place in September 1991, where the Sikh fighters under the command of Dasmesh Regiment Chief, Bhai Seetal Singh Mattewal took on 12,000 Indian Armed Forces. Shaheed Bhai Baljinder Singh Chaunkiman
Shaheed Bhai Baljinder Singh Chaunkiman was born into the household of Bapu Gurmail Singh & Mata Dalbeer Kaur. Bhai Sahib at a very young age became interested in Sikh affairs and would often read the Sikh awareness magazines of that time with a great deal of passion. Bhai Baljinder Singh was in the 9th grade when he left school to join the ranks of Sant Jarnail Singh and began to take an active role in the Dharam Yudh Morcha. Bhai Baljinder Singh was very highly influenced by Sant Jarnail Singh. With this the whole atmosphere of the house changed, with Gurbani recitations and Shabads being played non-stop, the household became one with a deep religious environment.
June 1984 – One Jujharoo’s Account

This is based on an interview with Bhai Sukhvant Singh Jalalabad, a prisoner in Nabha Jail. He fought in the June 1984 attack on Darbar Sahib. Bhai Sukhvant Singh began staying with Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in 1982 along with 11 other young men from his village. Later, six of those Singh’s would become Shaheeds during Bluestar and the rest were arrested and sent to Jodhpur Jail. Bhai Sukhvant Singh was released in 1989 and joined the Sikh Resistance Movement. He was arrested and sent back to jail in 1997 where he has remained since, except for a brief four-month release in 2000. This is his account of the attack and how he and other Singhs fought back. ਸਿੱਖ ਪੰਥ ਦੀ ਅਜ਼ਾਦ ਵਿਚਾਰਧਾਰਾ ਤੋਂ ਚਿੜ ਕੇ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਕਈ ਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਸਿਰ ਨਵੀਆਂ ਭਾਜੀਆਂ ਚਾੜਦੇ ਰਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਇਹ ਭਾਜੀਆਂ ਮੋੜਨ ਲਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਲਾਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਵੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਕਈ ਦੁਸ਼ਟਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਕਿਲਿਆਂ ਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਧੁਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਡੀ ਚਾੜਦੇ ਰਹੇ। ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਸੂਰਮਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਕਤਾਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਲੰਮੀ ਹੈ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਹੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਤਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਭਾਈ ਅਜੈਬ ਸਿੰਘ ‘ਮਹਾਂ ਕਾਲ’ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਵੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਆਮ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਪਤਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਭਾਈ ਅਜੈਬ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਸ. ਗੁਰਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਬੀਬੀ ਗੁਰਬਚਨ ਕੌਰ ਸੀ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਿੰਡ ਪੱਖੋਪੁਰ ਨੇੜੇ ਚੋਹਲਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ (ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ) ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ। ਆਪ ਸੱਤ ਭੈਣ-ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਚੋ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਸਨ। ਆਪ ਦੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਭੈਣ-ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੇਰਵਾ ਇਸ ਤਰਾਂ ਹੈ-ਕਸ਼ਮੀਰ ਕੌਰ, ਕਰਨੈਲ ਕੌਰ, ਦਲਬੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਸਿਮਰਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ, ਸੁਖਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਰਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ। Continue reading “Shaheed Bhai Ajaib Singh Mahakal”
